Music Director

Philip Sanborn

Philip Sanborn joined Bay Colony Brass as our Music Director in September, 2023. He comes to us with a long career as a conductor, brass player and music educator. He has served as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Tri-County Symphonic Band in Marion, MA and holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he studied with Abe Torchinsky. As a trombonist and euphonium player, Mr. Sanborn has performed with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, Ocean State Lyric Opera Orchestra, Rhode Island Civic Chorale Orchestra, The Bass-Wingate's Band (British Brass Band), Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, Tri-County Symphonic Band, Marion Concert Band, Our Lady of Light Band, and the American Band of Providence, R.I. As a jazz trombonist, Mr. Sanborn has performed both locally and internationally including the Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival. Mr. Sanborn has appeared with Cab Calloway, Julius La Rosa, Bobby Vinson, Duke Bellaire Big Band (Bovi's, East Providence, RI), John Allmark, Tony Giorgianni's Jazz Odyssey, White Heat Swing Orchestra, Ken Hadley Big Band, SouthCoast Jazz Orchestra, the Night Life Orchestra, Mahrud, Jorge Ferreira, International Portuguese Music Awards, and many others.

Assistant Music Director

Teresa Herfindahl

Teresa is a professional musician and educator, holding a M.M from University of the Pacific in performance where she had a fellowship in Music Theory and Conducting and a B.A. with honors in music from the University of California, Berkeley. She has many years of experience as a school music teacher, band director, orchestra director, choir director, and church choir director. As an orchestral musician she was an active freelancer in the San Francisco Bay and the Seattle areas, holding positions in the horn sections of numerous orchestras and ensembles including the Napa Valley Symphony, the Stockton Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic, Sacramento Opera, Tacoma Symphony, Federal Way Philharmonic, and the Tacoma Opera. Teresa is a licensed public school teacher in California, Washington State and Massachusetts. She currently teaches instrumental, choral and general music at the elementary and middle school levels in the Boston public schools. Teresa has had an active private studio teaching piano, woodwind, and brass instruments. She has also taught a home school student at the middle and high school level. With a life long passion for health and fitness, she also currently maintains a private studio, coaching clients to live healthfully.
